Freezeout poker: what it means to play without re-entry

An empty chair pulled away from a poker table, with chips farther back and the question “Out of chips, out for good?”

By the Editorial Team

Freezeout is a poker tournament format with a single entry: when you lose all your chips, your participation in that event ends. You cannot buy another entry to return to the competition or make a rebuy to continue after elimination. [1][2]

Freezeout, rebuy, re-entry, and add-on

TermWhat it meansWhat to check for the event
FreezeoutA single entry, with permanent elimination upon losing all your chips, without rebuys or re-entry.Whether the structure confirms this condition and the absence of additional chip purchases.
RebuyA purchase of replacement chips permitted by the tournament structure.Under what conditions rebuys are allowed and what limits apply.
Re-entryThe option to enter the tournament again after being eliminated.Whether returning is allowed and under what conditions.
Add-onAn additional chip purchase available during a period specified by certain structures.Whether this option exists and when it is available.

Hypothetical example

You lose some chips in a freezeout tournament and continue with the chips you have left. Later, you lose them all: at that point, you are eliminated and cannot buy another entry to return. [1][2]

What to check before registering

  • The advertised format and, where offered, the conditions for rebuys, re-entry, or add-ons: their limits and availability periods.
  • The starting stack, blind structure, and payouts. [1][2][3]

If the rules are unclear or conflicting, ask the organizers which conditions apply to your registration.
